2011 in Review - January & February

Written by  Chris Fallows

The start of 2011 did not bode well for a good year. Incredible gale force winds buffeted Cape Town for week after week keeping us ashore and cancelling a lot of trips and opportunities for great white shark photography. When we did get to sea we found icy cold, nutrient rich, upwelled water which was great for fish but dirty to dive in and not great for shark pictures.

When finally we did get a chance to get out into some good water in February we were rewarded and had a few excellent trips with pelagic sharks and wildlife. The highlight was a day with no less than 7 mako sharks, all in clear warm water and being able to share this with some fantastic guests who were doing a Sharks of Southern Africa specialty with us. The deep off Cape Point must surely rank as one of the best spots in the world to see and dive with large pelagic’s and also stand the chance to see the unexpected. These waters have blessed us with some fantastic sightings over the years and given us some unique shark photography opportunities.
