2011 in Review - June

Written by  Chris Fallows

The Great White Sharks at Seal Island were still surprisingly slow at the start of June but held promise as there were a few indictors that things would change. The weather however was anything but slow. A massive system roared towards the South Western Tip of Africa sending mountains of approaching water with it in the form of 30-40ft high waves.

While this made trips and shark photography tricky it creates a different spectacle. These waves are the playground of an elite bunch of big wave riders who hail from local pastures and a few from abroad. A good mate of mine Grant Spooner called me the night before to say it was time to gear up and get ready for massive surf. As forecast the “bombs” as big wave surfers call them arrived and it was inspiring to watch these guys pit themselves against three stories of water with only a thin biscuit of fiberglass to keep them ahead of the waves.

Later in the month an unusual SE storm lashed False Bay and our group watched as an angry sea unleashed it’s fury against our local harbour, it was indeed beautiful anger. The sharks once again stole the show however as despite an unusually quiet first two weeks of June they were back with a vengeance near the end of the month which was fortuitous as we started filming the latest in the Air Jaws series which will be the lead show for Discovery Channel 2012’s 25th anniversary of Shark Week. Ironically at the same time as Seal Island False Bay got busy, Dyer Island Gansbaai went dead quiet. The interesting thing was that we were not seeing their sharks at Seal Island so what the respective triggers were we are not sure.

The highlight of the shoot was unquestionably when Jeff Kurr, decided to shoot from the Seal Sled which gave a water line perspective of a breach and the decoy was towed pretty close behind the sled. After roughly an hour of towing , with an incredible pinky sky developing and the islands cormorants returning to roost a massive 4m+ male great white launched vertically into the air right behind the sled. It was awesome and every minute detail was captured on super high speed film.On the breaching side of things another highlight was seeing a shark flying through the air with the sun rising just behind it, a truly breathtaking sight and one those lucky enough to see it won’t forget in a hurry.

Once again blessed with an amazing great white shark picture.
