October 2008 SHARK BYTES

Dear Shark lovers,

The Great white shark season of 2008 is now behind us but we are already planning for the 2009 season. I do not usually send out any marketing material but we are sure many of you will not want to miss out on the exciting and specialized expeditions we are offering.

For the first time Chris & I will be hosting 3 Exclusive 10 day expeditions focusing on the various spectacular behavior that takes place at Seal Island. The dates for each expedition have been specifically chosen over what is historically the best period for each focus of the trips.

We have also chosen to limit these expeditions to a maximum of 8 guests per trip rather than our usual 12 or up to 20- 45 as is normal elsewhere. Being part of such a small group means that the viewing and photographic opportunities are enhanced and dive times will be longer. As Chris & I and our crew are extremely passionate about sharks we would like to share these peak periods of the shark season with other shark fanatics.

I know that many of you enjoy hearing about the sharks each month and watch all of the documentaries. We firmly believe that to see a Great White Shark is a once in a lifetime experience. At Seal Island it is not only possible to cage dive with the Great whites but it is also home to one of Nature’s most spectacular phenomenon, the breaching Great White Sharks. There is no other spot on earth where the sharks display this behavior on such a frequent basis and there is also no other spot where the natural predatory behavior is as intense.

Even if you are not a qualified diver you will still have the opportunity to snorkel in the cage. But as the sharks come so close to the boat the surface viewing is also excellent.

The 3 Expeditions will focus on the following:

EXPEDITION 1: OPEN OCEAN AND COASTAL PREDATORS

DATE: 16 to 25 May 2009

This is a unique time period where it is possible to see a variety of shark species. We will be focusing on Great White Sharks at Seal Island; Mako and Blue sharks that are found in the Agulas Current off Cape Point and Sevengill cow sharks and endemic sharks in the kelp forests in False Bay.

EXPEDITION 2: GREAT WHITE SHARK: DIVE AND BREACH SPECIALTY

DATE: 18 to 27 June 2009

This is historically the time period where we see the highest concentration of Great white sharks around the boat so the main focus is on cage diving. It is also a good time for breaches on the decoy and a possibility of natural predations.

What makes this trip special is that having a high number of sharks around the boat means that we do get an intimate look at the different personalities that makes each individual shark unique. This is what truly makes the Great white sharks so special.

EXPEDITION 3: GREAT WHITE SHARK: NATURAL PREDATION SPECIALTY

DATE: 25 July to 3 August 2009

Seal Island is home to the most intense natural predation of Great white sharks on seals. It is extremely rare to see any sort of predation activity in the animal kingdom but a number of factors combined together seem to have made Seal Island a perfect hunting spot.

Although we do see this hunting behavior throughout the season this is normally the peak time for the most intense hunting events and it is possible to see multiple events during a morning. We have tremendous respect for both shark and seal and all observations take place from a respectful distance so as not to disturb any outcome. All activity takes place on the surface so it provides some very exciting and challenging photographic opportunites.

It will also be possible to cage dive during this expedition.
