Blue Water Predators
So having worked at the world’s foremost white shark feeding ground
for over a decade how can anything compare to this?
Well there is something ………… For those of you with a penchant for adventure, a passion for nature and a quest to do something few others have the chance to why not try our Blue Water free dives with Mako and Blue sharks.
The mako is not only the fastest shark in the sea but it is also the King of the open ocean, a realm that few ever experience. Warm currents and inky blue waters greet you as you dive over water that is 1000m or more deep.
The mako is the great white of the open seas and it is out there on it’s terms that we free dive with them, no cages, no chain mail suits just a healthy respect and an opportunity to briefly glimpse into the life of these beautiful cobalt blue warriors. Our success rate is around 85% in seeing sharks on these pelagic trips, either blues or makos, and on many trips we also free dive with huge yellowfin tuna and other species while in the company of the sharks.
For those who have a passion for creatures of the feather the pelagic bird watching is amongst the best in the world with up to 7 species of albatross being seen on one day and almost certainly 3-4. These birds are all seen while we wait for the sharks. These trips also depart from Simonstown but head out off Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope both of which are spectacular and much revered nautical landmarks.
While we wait for the sharks we also tag and release game fish.
Most of the tuna we catch are yellowfin of 100-220lb so these trips really do have something for everyone.
The high season for pelagic sharks is November–June with the better weather months being February-June.
Water temperature is around 19°-23°C and visibility averages 50ft with days of 100+ pretty common.
For anyone who may have seen great whites already or someone who wishes not to be caged up and see the sharks on their terms this is an unsurpassed opportunity for you.
We do also offer expeditions that are two days or longer where we can show you the great whites on one day and the awesome pelagic animals on the next as well as a large variety of other species.
Best months for this combination are April, May and June.
As with the great whites we collect data on these trips to help conserve these pelagic sharks from the pressures of shark finning and longlining and hopefully add to our understanding of them.
