Fascinated by the Great White Shark?

 

The Great White Shark Expedition together with the Shark Biology Course in South Africa is operated by Apex Shark Expeditions, owned by Chris and Monique Fallows. The expedition will be hosted by Professor Alessandro De Maddalena, one of the world’s foremost shark experts, who has worked with Apex Shark Expeditions since 2010. The guests will have the possibility of encountering Great White sharks in their habitat and learn about biology, ethology and ecology of these predators. There will also be excellent chances to observe other species of sharks including Blue, Shortfin Mako, Bronze Whaler and Broadnose Sevengill Shark.

Everyone can dive with sharks, no scuba qualification is needed. There is space for a maximum of 11 participants. Participants must land at Cape Town Airport, South Africa, and leave from the same airport.

Beautiful Places along the Cape Coast

We’ll stay three days in Simon’s Town, one day in Gansbaai, and three days in Mossel Bay.

These are three small towns located along the coast of the Western Cape, respectively one hour, two hours and five hours by vehicle from Cape Town airport.

We'll also visit Robberg Nature Reserve in Plettenberg Bay which is located close to Mossel Bay.

Spectacular Accommodation

We’ll have six nights accommodation as follows:

We’ll stay two nights in Simon’s Town, at The Grosvenor (www.thegrosvenor.co.za ) a group of elegant apartments with a view of False Bay. The Grosvenor is just 12 minute walk from the harbour where Apex Shark Expeditions’ boat, White Pointer II, is moored, and is very close to Simon’s Town center. We’ll have bedding and towels. The rooms we may have for our group are twin sharing. It’s possible to have a single room, with a supplement and if requested in advance. The rooms have a bathroom en-suite. We’ll have a large kitchen for the entire group.

We'll stay one night in Gansbaai at the White Shark Guest House (www.whitesharkguesthouse.co.za ) located right in front of the cage dive operation and 400 m from the harbour.

We’ll stay three nights in Mossel Bay at The Point Village Hotel (www.pointvillagehotel.co.za) located a 1 minute walk from the sea and 5 minutes by car from the cage dive operation. We’ll have bedding and towels. The rooms we may have for our group are twin sharing. The rooms have a bathroom en-suite.

Wi-Fi internet connection is available at all three accommodation establishments.

Note: Power sockets of type M (BS 546 3-pin plugs, 15-A). Adapters can be easily found in stores and supermarkets in South Africa.

Cost

- ZAR 42 160.00 per person sharing. 

Cost includes:

– Land transport from Cape Town airport to Simon’s Town, from Simon’s Town to Gansbaai, from Gansbaai to Mossel Bay, from Mossel Bay to Plettenberg Bay, from Plettenberg Bay to Mossel Bay, and from Mossel Bay to Cape Town airport.

– 6 night's accommodation.

– Course in biology, ethology and ecology of sharks presented by Professor Alessandro De Maddalena,

– 7 trips (weather permitting) from False Bay, Gansbaai and Mossel Bay to observe Great White sharks (and possibly other species of sharks) and to cage dive (snorkelling) or to witness the Great White shark's breaching behaviour. 

– Wetsuit, hood, booties, mask and weight belt.

– Possibilities to observe other marine animals: Cape fur seal, Southern Right Whale, Brydes Whale, Humpback Whale, Long-Beaked Common Dolphin, Bottlenose Dolphin, Ocean Sunfish, Chacma Baboon, African Penguin.

– Sandwiches and soft drinks on board as well as breakfast on early morning sea trips.

 

Cost excludes:

- Flights. 

- Transfers to cage dive operations and restaurants.

- Transfers not pertaining to the expedition. 

- Undersuit (suggested).

- Meals.

 

Number of participants

- We need a minimum of 6 guests for this trip to depart and a maximum of 11. 

 

Bad weather days

- Where a shark trip has to be cancelled due to bad weather, there will be no refund, and a half day excursion will be arranged at either Cape Point Nature Reserve, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, Cape Town,or Table Mountain.

 

Sightings

- Sightings of sharks are not guaranteed. The expedition takes place during the peak season for White shark predation on seals in the area. However we are witnessing a dramatic decline in shark numbers off the South African coast, due to fishing activities. The Blue and Mako shark trip off Cape Point can only be operated in perfect weather conditions.

 

Booking and cancellation

- A 50% non-refundable deposit via wire transfer upon booking with balance due 120 days before the start of the expedition.

- Less than 120 days before start date:100% of the fee.

- No show: 100% of the fee.
