Natural Predation Observation

This is our premier expedition of the year hosted by well known documentary hosts Chris & Monique Fallows. The focus of this expedition is on observing and photographing the famous natural predation behaviour between the Great White Shark and the Cape Fur Seal. This is one of the most spectacular natural history predatory events on the Planet and a privilege to have realistic opportunities of viewing this behaviour at Seal Island.

Mossel Bay has been chosen as our second location of this expedition as this area offers great opportunities of seeing a Great white shark breach. This sunrise trip offers excellent photographic opportunities and under Chris’s guidance the most optimal lighting conditions are carefully selected. From here on in its up to the sharks as to whether a great photographic image and spectacular sight can be witnessed!

Natural Predation and Breaching is our specific area of expertise and having witnessed and recorded just over 10,000 predatory events in the last 20 years we are able to use our knowledge and experience to achieve these goals. The dates for this expedition have been chosen over what is historically the most intense natural predatory activity period at Seal Island and Mossel Bay.

We have a considerable respect and field knowledge for both predator and prey. Our emphasis is to make sure we do our best to put the wildlife first and whilst you will be close enough to get great viewing and photographic opportunities, we will not push the limits to interfere with the event.

A trip overview

Guests need to arrive in Cape Town the day before the start of the expedition.Should you require additional accommodation before or after your expedition, we will gladly book it for you.

The expedition consists of 10 days of Great White morning trips. The first five days of trips meet at 06h30 each morning at the Apex Shark Expeditions shop in Simon's Town. This part of the trip focuses on predation and cage diving weather permitting. Please find a detailed morning shark trip itinerary here

The second five days is made up of breaching trips off Mossel bay, 4 - 5 hours up the coast/garden route. On the 5th day, after the morning shark trip, you will be transferred to Mossel Bay via road shuttle where you will spend the next 5 nights doing early morning breaching trips.

If you would like to maximise your time with the sharks, you can upgrade your expedition to include afternoon Great White trips in both locations which we recommend is pre-booked. Please note that these afternoon trips are scheduled trips with other guests on board and not exclusively limited to expedition guests.

After the morning breaching trip on the 24th July, you will be transferred to Cape Town International airport. Please schedule a late evening flight to ensure you have sufficient time to check in.

We offer guided tours and safaris in both locations. These can be booked prior to your arrival (request list of activities) or you may book this in our shop when you are here.

Simon's Town and Mossel Bay

The first leg of the trips operate in the waters surrounding Seal Island in False Bay, Simon' Town. This small Island is unquestionably the first choice location to see Great White Shark predation.

The second leg of the trips operate in the waters surrounding Seal Island in Mossel Bay. This tiny Island is a draw card for great white sharks to propel themselves clear of the water whilst hunting for Cape Fur Seals.
